Friday the 13th??? That was nothin'...

First, a quick Happy Birthday to my dad, who reached a significant age milestone yesterday - ironically on Friday the 13th. Wish we could be there to celebrate with you in person...

Next, two reasons why Friday the 13th isn't nearly as cursed as Saturday the 14th seems to be. Nicki and I woke up this morning and our bed was rockin', but unfortunately the cause would not have been rated by the Motion Picture Association of America as anything above PG-13. We woke up at 6:37AM to a moderate-sized earthquake, which according to the USGS website was about a 5.3 on the Richter scale and about 30 miles south of us. Here's a picture from the US Geological Survey site:

The orange square up above shows the location of the quake. The yellow arrow (drawn in by yours truly) shows our approximate location.

In other news, a quick look at Weather.com shows the latest satellite images for our area:

Notice any round orangish-red objects directly south of us? Man, I hope that puppy makes a sharp turn towards the Pacific.

Woke me up too, but it had to have been a bit worse where you were. I figured being on the 10th floor of a building added to the swaying.

If this Peninsula is Rockin' Don't Bother Knockin'!!! Ouch, thought you'd like a goofy laugh after your big shakeup. Glad you guys are ok, and love the maps.

Stay dry and safe, hoping you're getting close to the end of the typhoon season soon too.

When is typhoon season going to end?? Hopefully soooooon! We sure have had some crazy weather lately, but the good thing about passing typhoons is that they always bring a few days of gorgeous weather after they have stopped dumping rain on us!

I was sitting outside with the dogs when the earthquake happened and it took me a minute to realize what as going on. I think earthqaukes feel a lot smaller when your are outside because nothing rattles on the walls or swings from the ceiling. Madu didn't even bark. lol

I'm glad you guys safely made it through the natural disaster parade this past weekend!

I was wondering if the earthquake was near you. I was looking on the USGS website for information on the Hawaii earthquake that hit yesterday, and I saw another box near Japan. Now that I think about it, I think there were two boxes near Japan. Lot's of activity in the Pacific. I'm glad your safe.

On a side note, I pulled a 13 and will be moving to the BRAC team.

Congrats on the promotion, Chuck. I'll shoot you an email so I can hear all about it. Yeah, the other earthquake was up north a lot more, several hundred miles away and that was a pretty big one. Fortunately, that big blog of a typhoon missed up. It ended up wide right.

Alan, glad we continue to provide some level of entertainment. Japan is full of quirky things, so when I wear my optimistic hat, they seem funny. When I'm being a pessimist... sometimes it's just frustrating. Here's to the cup always being at least half full.

Jeff, Rey and Aime, thanks for chiming in too. Glad that we were able to avoid much trauma from all the bad things around these parts. Rey, I hope you guys get your household goods all home soon.

I hadn't heard about the earthquake in Japan. Isnt this the second earthquake you have had since you have been there? And all those years living out here in CA and nothin... Yikes. I hope that storm finds somewhere else to go!

Wow.. another hurricane! I believe the hurricane season ends Nov 1, so hopefully it's the same for typhoons as well. Stay dry & safe!

ginger's mom,

There have been three earthquakes that I felt in Tokyo since I arrived on September 14th, so I'd have to believe Mike, Nikki and Josh have felt a few more than that (unless they were insanely lucky!)

Well, maybe we've had them but as Mike will attest, when living in California, we tend to not feel them as much. We get used to the ground moving :) Mike has a California story about when he first moved there that we'll have to save for another day. I live about 45 minutes-1 hr. away from the Bay Area earthquake (in NoCal) when it happened during the World Series. Our swimming pools shook and dishes fell off the shelves but, most of us didn't feel a thing!
